The attendance at the 22nd Stab-N-Grab was down a little, probably
because of the Red Rock Open that was held on Saturday. The hard
core fencers showed up to get another day of fencing in. It was a
very exciting event for several reasons. First, it looked like
Frank was going to get his fourth win. Filip, the other three time
winner lost in the first round, which I don't think has ever happened.
And last and best of all JESSICA WON!
Ava and Eric both got byes in the first round since we were two short
for a sixteen tableau. Libby and Lisa started the event with Lisa
totally crushing Libby. Frank and Deanna were next. Deanna was jumping
for joy when she got a touch on Frank. Pells of laughter accompanied
her touch but Frank was able to finally get past the first round. He
asked me to point out that he started down three touches (cry baby!).
James and Ray were next with Ray taking the win. Ken and Alan faced
off with Alan winning. It should be noted here that Ken had fenced
all three weapons on Saturday and was not up to his usual energetic
self. Father, John, fenced son Jack, with the novice John using his
longer reach to defeat one of his two sons. Filip and Jessica closed
out the first round with Jessica taking the win in an upset. The crowd
was cheering loudly at her victory.
Ava and Lisa started the second round with Lisa defeating Ava, who
was fencing left handed because of tendonitis. Frank and Ray were next
Frank was able to slip past Ray and for the first time in many, many months
was able to get past the second round. Visions of Pierre Reposte began
to dance in his eyes. John now faced son number two in the next bout
but Alan's experience and longer reach clearly gave him the advantage
and the win. Eric and Jessica finished the round with Jessica winning
in another upset!
Round three saw Lisa and Frank first. Frank was able to get the drop on
Lisa and win. Frank was sure he was set now. He was only one bout away from
his fourth Stab-N-Grab win. Alan and Jessica was the other semi-final
bout and both fenced their hearts out. However, it was not to be Alan
in the finals but Jessica. The crowd went crazy when she won and she
looked pretty stunned! The Red Rock Wild Women were particularly loud
in their support. The final was Frank and Jessica. The crowd was totally
involved in the bout. Everyone was looking for Jessica to defeat Frank,
but in all honestly were not confident it would happen. Jessica stayed
calm and confident and was able to get the two touches needed to take
Frank down. The crowd went absolutely crazy when Jessica won. Again,
the Red Rock Wild Women were the loudest. Congratulations Jessica!
